Manila, Philippines
-- Intel and Globe Telecom announced the official roll-out of commercial WiMax services in the country through Globe Broadband.

After jointly conducting WiMax trial deployments in Cavite since 2005, the two companies are proud to announce that commercial WiMax services are currently underway, providing broadband access to underserved areas in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

“Intel is delighted to take part in the launch of Globe Telecom’s WiMAX services in the Philippines,” said Navin Shenoy, Intel Corporation Vice President and APAC General Manager. “Around the world, service providers and governments are deploying 4G WiMAX networks to help bridge the digital divide and bring affordable, high-speed mobile broadband to their citizens. WiMAX is the right technology, available at the right time for countries to accelerate broadband and aid in economic recovery.”

WiMax broadband is immediately available through Globe Broadband in the following areas: South Luzon, Visayas, Cagayan de Oro, and selected areas in Metro Manila. For as low as PHP795/month, consumers can now have hi-speed broadband Internet access in areas where Internet access had been previously difficult to provide infrastructure-wise.

By end-June, Globe plans to extend WiMax services to selected areas in Central Luzon, more markets in Mindanao, and Rizal, and intends to offer this service at even more attractive price points and packaged bundles in the future.

“We challenge anyone with a competitive wireless subscription to try out our Wimax-backed plans. We are so confident with our service that we challenge you try out our connection, risk-free. Should you be unhappy with the connection within one month from installation, we’ll give you your money-back, no questions asked,” says Menchi Orlina, head of the Consumer Broadband Business Group.

Today, with the help of the revolutionary 4G technology, WiMax is extending the reach of broadband to more locations than ever before and at more affordable costs.

“The value proposition of 802.16e WiMax is the Internet as it was meant to be: open, fast and mobile,” said Ricky Banaag, country manager, sales and marketing, Intel Philippines. “The commercial roll-out represents a significant milestone in the growth of WiMax, both globally and domestically. With the rapid growth of mobile devices in the country, Intel believes that Globe Broadband’s WiMax network will further accelerate the adoption of mobile computing in the Philippines.”

WiMAX is a broadband wireless technology that provides high speed for accessing large amounts of such data as movies and multi-media content on a variety of devices, including Intel-based notebooks. It is the first 4G solution available today that meets the pent-up demand for the high-speed wireless Internet.

Demand for broadband data access has exploded worldwide. Today, WiMAX is deployed in 139 countries covering at least 430 million people.
