Into The Cloud – WD 2go Unveiled and Explained

Your Files To Go

A couple of months after news about WD 2go surfaced on our Tech News section, WD officially launched the service yesterday in the country. WD 2go is a personal cloud service that allows owners of a WD My Book Live to have secure remote access to the drive. Realizing the benefits of cloud computing, WD 2go allows users to keep important data in the cloud so that they can access it, regardless of time and place as long as there is Internet connection. WD 2go also enables users to seamlessly access and transfer files of popular formats across different operating systems (Android, Mac OS, iOS, or Windows) and mobile computing devices.

WD 2go comes in two editions. With the free variant, users can view documents from My Book Live, view photos and images, listen to music, and watch movies. On the other hand, users of the fee-based Professional edition can exploit advanced features such as: clipping of folders and content for online access; auto syncing of offline folders and content; four-digit security code; emailing, printing, opening of files with third-party applications; and live folders (for Android only).

As WD 2go can accommodate videos, music, and photos in different file types, users can employ it as a tool to stream content to their WD TV, Smart TV, or DLNA-certified devices such as a Blu-ray disc player, Xbox 360, and the PlayStation 3. As WD 2go serves as a storage extension, users with notebooks and tablets that carry a small-capacity drive within can now instantly have massive storage. A WD 2go-connected My Book Live appears as a normal drive on the OS’ directory. Importantly, with the help of WD’s SmartWare application, backing up of files becomes an automated process with WD 2go.

Compared with Apple's iCloud, WD 2go with WD My Book Live offers a more practical personal cloud storage solution. While Apple’s iCloud service costs USD 40 per year for 20GB storage or USD 100 per year for 50GB storage, WD 2go with My Book Live costs USD 140 for the 1TB model or USD 250 for the 3TB, for a one-time purchase.

WD 2go (free download) and WD 2go Pro (USD 2.99) are currently available for download from the iTunes Store and Android Market. My Book Live personal cloud storage is available at select retailers and is distributed by Iontech Technologies Inc. in the Philippines. Prices are as follow: PhP 6,990 for 1TB, PhP 8,290 for 2TB, and PhP 10,590 for 3TB.
