Event: Allied Forces – Samsung, Don Bosco Team Up

Hot on heels of the recent event that has established its tie-up with La Salle Greenhills’ eTextbook/Personal Learning Device (PEARL) project, Samsung Electronics Philippines Corporation (SEPCO) this time brought us to Don Bosco Technical College (DBTC) in Mandaluyong City. Demonstrating once again its commitment to its corporate social responsibility, Samsung has refortified its long-time partnership with DBTC to put up a new undertaking that will further develop students’ technical skills.
Intended to be carried out under DBTC’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), the new endeavour will involve a 15-month program which will start with a 10-month classroom and laboratory training. The remaining five months will be spent for internship. As part of the new project’s commencement, a score of graduating students from DBTC’s TVET program have been selected to become the first batch of beneficiaries.
Additionally, the curriculum will include Samsung Technology which will help students become familiarized with Samsung’s cutting-edge innovations in the fields of computing, consumer electronics, and mobile communications. To realize this vision, Samsung has donated equipment to DBTC’s technical laboratory, which include LED HDTVs and air conditioning units, to name a few.
“Samsung continues to build on our company’s belief in the power of technology to improve the plight of individuals in particular and society in general,“ said SEPCO president Mr. KC Park.
“We are proud to say that the program has spread its wings well, and we are certain we can extend its benefits exponentially with both our long-term commitment,” said DBTC VP for Planning and Development Mr. Jun Bernad.
Long before this new partnership, DBTC had received a USD 50,000 grant from Samsung for a comprehensive e-learning project in early 2000. Today, although DBTC has similar existing programs with other firms like Carrier and Whirlpool, and with automotive companies like General Motors and Porsche, the partnership with Samsung is unique because of its extent. Mr. Bernad mentioned that it will be replicated in other DBTC centers in the Philippines in the future.
Samsung has been supportive of DBTC’s various projects, including improving its curriculum, aligning it with the industry requirements, and intensifying trainees’ competence by providing them with quality, relevant, accessible, and available training programs. Through these ventures, Samsung and DBTC hope to bring about world-class graduates who can compete in the labor market and, at the same time, to transform them to become responsible citizens of the society.
Since 1971, there area about 60,000 out of school youth who have benefited from the programs of the different Don Bosco Training Centers and street children centers. To date, statistics show that there were 53,863 graduates or 1,683 out-of-school youth per year that were given the opportunity to be employed.
