Making Smart TVs Smarter!
The advent of Smart TVs into the locat market prompted Samsung to host the first Samsung Smart TV Apps Congress, an event that is also the very first of its kind in the Philippines.

The aim is to invite software developers to take part in creating apps that are suited for Filipino users. While globally available apps for the Samsung Smart TV are readily available, Samsung hopes that by providing localized apps, Filipino Smart TV users will be able to maximize the capabilities and benefits offered by Samsung Smart TVs.
As such, Samsung launched a Developer’s Challenge which will be open to students and corporate entities. The goal of the challenge is to create a locally relevant and viable app for the Samsung Smart TV. There will be five categories to choose from when designing the app namely Sports, Lifestyle, Information, Education, and Utilities. To participate in the challenge, designers need only complete Samsung’s set of requirements:
Concept Paper
- Proposed Application Title
- Category Type
- Application Description
- Features (What the application can do)
- Sample Screenshots / Layout
- Proponent’s Contact Information
o Name
o School / Company
o School / Company Address
o Email Address
o Contact Numbers (Landline and/or Mobile)
Samsung will also require that a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) be signed. Upon completion of all requirements, participants will be provided access to the Smart TV’s development kit. For further details and inquiries, interested parties may contact Ms. Sophia Singanon (s.singanon@samsung.com).
The winner(s) will be notified via email and will be awarded a cash prize of PhP 100,000, a Samsung Smart TV, and a partnership with Samsung. All Proposals must be submitted on or before November 14, 2011.
Samsung also showcased some of the currently available apps for their Smart TVs. These apps are all globally available and free to be downloaded by Smart TV owners. New apps will be automatically downloaded by Smart TVs and be made ready for use by consumers.

The latter part of the congress was allotted to a detailed discussion on the inner workings of the Smart TV OS to allow developers to better understand and help them create relevant apps for the challenge. The allotted time also delved into Samsung Developer Forum and seller accounts as well as the certification process of the proposed apps.
