Sandy Bridge CPUs to be Phased Out?
According to Digitimes, Intel will begin phasing out Sandy Bridge CPUs by September of this year. This is according to notebook manufacturers whom Digitimes spoke to.
Prior to Computex 2012, Intel announced a slew of duo-core Ivy Bridge mobile CPUs that are meant to replace their Sandy Bridge mobile counterparts in ultrabooks and laptops. The timing of the phasing-out exercise is to coincide with the back-to-school demand for PC equipment in September that will begin top pick up as early as June as downstream activities by the supplier chain owners get going.
Digitimes reported that Intel have already begun shipments of the new duo-core Ivy Bridge mobile CPUs and those systems will hit the retail shelves by the end of June. If Intel is indeed planning to phase out the older Sandy Bridge CPUs, we are expecting to see price reductions in devices featuring the end-of-life CPUs.
