First Looks: LG Flatron D2342P 3D Monitor – Cinema 3D Hits The Desktop
3D Without Pretense
While Samsung’s SyncMaster S27A950 3D monitor comes with an avant-garde design, LG has taken a different route for the Flatron D2342P by having it sport an unassuming physique. In its entirety, the D2342 is clad in a glossy black plastic chassis and weighs light. Compared to other 3D monitors in the market, such as the ASUS VG236H and the BenQ XL2410T, the D2342’s display panel is thinner. The 23-inch, LED-backlit panel attaches to a short fixed stand that enables you to tilt it easily.

Cinema 3D Certified
Like LG’s current lineup of 3D HDTVs, the D2342P also carries the Cinema 3D branding. Moreover, it leverages on the revolutionary Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) technology, which LG promotes as a flicker-free approach in creating 3D HDTVs and monitors. That said, the D2342P is also fitted with polarized film substrate and is bundled with light, skinny 3D eyeglasses that neither require a battery nor charging to operate.

Experiencing 3D
LG has incorporated 3D Effect mode on the D2342P in order to compensate the dimming effect that 3D glasses have. Accessible through the monitor’s control panel, 3D effect mode fiddles with the display’s contrast ratio to deliver a bright and clear 3D image. The mode also helps in sharpening the overall picture quality to provide viewers with a greater feel of depth when watching 3D content. LG also bundles the D2342P with TriDef 2D to 3D conversion software. While low power consumption is an inherent attribute in LED-backlit monitors, LG enhances the D2342P’s eco-friendliness with Super LED technology. This technology drastically cuts down on power consumption without sacrificing image quality.

Below are two sample videos that we took to demonstrate the D2342P's 3D capability.
Final Thoughts
Although not as elegant as the Samsung SyncMaster S27A950, the LG Flatron D2342P delivers all the features that you need to enjoy viewing 3D content on your desktop. It is easy to set up and comes with straightforward settings. Apart from standard features like a basic set of connectors and built-in speakers, the secret sauce of the D2342 is LG’s proprietary and GPU-independent FPR technology, which makes it suitable for any platform.

On top of these, we also commend LG, because of FPR, for coming up with one of the most affordable 3D monitors in the market at the moment. The D2342P officially costs PhP 25,000, but online sources reveal that you can also spot a good deal of it at a cheaper price of around PhP 18,000.
