Two Pros Compared, Contrasted
Five months after Samsung had globally introduced the Galaxy Pro B7510 in March 2011, the Korean company announced another Android-based smartphone, the Galaxy Y Pro B5510, which features a QWERTY keypad. The latter reached the Philippine shores during the last quarter of 2011. Although the Galaxy Pro and the Galaxy Y Pro sport very similar form factors, the two smartphones show dissimilarities in many areas as well.

Flaunting a smaller 2.6-inch touchscreen display (against the Pro’s 2.8-inch), the Galaxy Y Pro has a narrower fascia than its predecessor. With a less wide profile in front, the Galaxy Y Pro fits nicely in the hand. One’s grip on the smartphone will be further enhanced, thanks to its textured back cover. Samsung has maintained the 320 x 240 screen resolution for the Galaxy Y Pro. Surprisingly, it is a tad heavier than the Galaxy Pro, in spite of the smaller size.

While the Galaxy Pro adopted a reflective, metal-like border, the frame is unassumingly expressed in the case of the Galaxy Y Pro, appearing with a glossy black paintjob. The placement of the power button, volume rocker, and the 3.5mm audio jack on the Galaxy Y Pro remain the same as on the Galaxy Pro, though the micro USB port is now situated on the bottom (the Galaxy Pro has it on top).

Another conspicuous element that makes the Galaxy Y Pro different from the Galaxy Pro is its optical trackpad. Samsung has neatly placed this addition along the flat Menu, Home, Back, and Search buttons, all of which are found beneath the display. Whereas on the Galaxy Pro, these buttons appear in rectangular shape. The optical trackpad on the Galaxy Y Pro is a dual-purpose enhancement: it works as a navigator and as a selector. However, considering the presence of the touchscreen display, you might rarely use the optical trackpad as a means to interact with the handset.

The Galaxy Y Pro’s QWERTY keypad consists of rounded, chiclet-type buttons, which is a far cry from the Galaxy Pro’s grid-like keypad implementation. Pressing any letter of the keypad will automatically prompt Google’s search application, whereas the last two buttons located at the lower right corner can be mapped to launch a certain program.

Taking off the back cover, you will find out that the microSD card slot is easily accessible and not obscured under the battery module. This means that you no longer have to restart the Galaxy Y Pro if you will have to insert a microSD card into its respective slot. You may shove into the handset up to a 32GB microSD to boost up its trivial 160MB built-in storage.
