Intel to Release Core i7-3970X Extreme Edition as New Sandy Bridge-E CPU

According to DonanimHaber, Intel is preparing to launch its Core i7-3970X Extreme Edition in Q4 in its efforts to refresh its Sandy Bridge-E offerings. This new CPU is expected to replace the current Core i7-3960X.

The new processor will reportedly pick up for where its predecessor left off. The Intel Core i7-3970X Extreme Edition is based on the same 32 nanometer (nm) Sandy Bridge-E architecture. It sports the same six cores with a dozen threads but has a higher stock clock speed of 3.5GHz stock, while its maximum Turbo Frequency is rated at 4.0GHz.

The processor also comes fully-unlocked, ready to be overclocked. It is reported to have a higher TDP of 150W that is 20W than the Intel Core i7-3960X. The expected launch price of the Core i7-3970X Extreme Edition is US$1,000. A check with our local retailers revealed that its predecessor is currently available for a princely sum of about S$1,328. There may be a price reduction for the older processor as the Core i7-3970X takes its place.

The Sandy Bridge-E family of processors is only compatible with LGA2011 CPU sockets; hence, only owners and supporters of Intel X79 Express chipset motherboards need to apply. Coupled with their hefty price tags, such computing hardware is ideal for a select target group of users who can afford to indulge.
