Benchmark Results and Battery Life

The Gionee ELIFE S5.5 was originally running on the Jelly Bean version of Android when it was launched. Thankfully, Gionee released the KitKat OTA upgrade for the ELIFE S5.5 a few weeks after. Whether it is running on Jelly Bean or KitKat, Android is generally suave on the ELIFE S5.5. However, one specific instance in which the ELIFE S5.5 lagged was when we played Plants vs Zombies 2’s Endless Zone. The smartphone lagged and felt warmer when a massive amount of zombies appeared on the game.

While the preceding ELIFE E7 comes with the more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core chip, the ELIFE S5.5 uses the more popular MediaTek MT6592 octa-core chip. We say that it is popular because we have already seen several smartphone models powered by the said eight-core chip in the past months. Working with the MT6592 is a Mali-450MP4 GPU and 2GB RAM. In order to find out how it fares against other octa-core smartphones in the market, we ran some benchmark applications on the ELIFE S5.5 and compared its scores with those of the Cherry Mobile Omega Infinity, MyPhone Agua Infinity, Starmobile Octa, ThL T100S (Gold Edition), and the Zopo ZP998.

Starting off with AnTuTu Benchmark, the ELIFE S5.5 yielded a score of 27904. It is not the highest, but it is not far behind the overall scores of other octa-core smartphone models in the chart. Two models that are quite adjacent to the performance of the ELIFE S5.5 in this test are the ThL T100S (Gold Edition) and the MyPhone Agua Infinity.

In Quadrant Standard, the ELIFE S5.5 registered the lowest score of 12236. It is quite close to the score of the Agua Infinity (13506), which is the second lowest player in this category. Other contenders received a score higher than 16000 points.

The ELIFE S5.5 remained the poorest performer in Futuremark’s 3DMark – Ice Storm Unlimited, yielding a score of 6726, which is close to that of the gilded T100S. The two smartphones with best graphics performance are the Agua Infinity and the Octa, both of which scored higher than 7000 points.

In terms of Internet browsing, the ELIFE S5.5 registered a speed of 1151.4ms on the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark, which is not far behind the recorded speeds of other octa-core smartphones in the region such as the Huawei Honor 3X and the Xiaomi Redmi Note. We also measured the download and upload speeds of the ELIFE S5.5 on Speedtest.net. The fastest download and upload speeds that we got with the ELIFE S5.5 are 1.73Mbps and 1.63Mbps, respectively. We did the test in Eastwood City using Smart Communications’ 3G network.

The last but not the least that we observed on the ELIFE S5.5 was its battery life. Based on our video loop test, it emerged as one of the octa-core smartphones with the shortest battery life: it registered 220 minutes. Its battery life is close to those of the Agua Infinity and the Octa, the two recorded 254 minutes and 187 minutes respectively. Both the ELIFE S5.5 and the Octa come with a 2300mAh battery, whereas the Agua Infinity has a 2350mAh battery.
