Dell Venue 7-inch and 8-inch Tablets Arrive with Intel Atom Dual-core Processors

Dell's new Venue 8 (left) and Venue 7 (right) tablets based on Intel's latest Intel Atom (Merrifield) SoC.

Dell launched updates to their Android-based Venue tablets earlier this week with updated Intel Atom processors based on the Merrified SoC. Designed for entertainment and productivity, these x86-based Android tablets will come with premium audio technology from Waves MAXXAudio Pro for great audio quality, especially when paired with Dell's optional Bluetooth Portable Speaker system.

The new tablets will be based on the latest Android 4.4 (KitKat) operating system and will feature faster dual-core Atom processors.

Both the Dell Venue 7 and Venue 8 tablets feature a rather basic 5MP rear camera.

The Dell Venue 7 will come with a dual-core Intel Atom processor Z3460 that runs at clock frequencies of up to 1.6GHz. It comes equipped with 2GB of memory and 16GB of storage while a built-in micro-SD card reader will allow the tablet to expand its storage up to another 64GB. The display is sized at 7-inches with WXGA screen resolution (1280 x 800) and the tablet weighs only 290g for the most basic configuration (without LTE).

The larger Dell Venue 8 features an 8-inch IPS display at full HD (1920 x 1200) and it comes with a more powerful dual-core Intel Atom Z3480 processor that runs up to 2.1GHz. Similar to the Dell Venue 7, the Venue 8 will also come with 2GB of memory and 16GB of storage, along with a micro-SD card slot that allows memory cards of up to 64GB. The Venue 8 retains the same thickness (at 8.95mm) as the Venue 7 but will weigh a little more at 338g (for the basic configuration).

The micro-SD card slot is located at the side of the tablet and is hidden by a plastic flap that's easily removed. A second slot beside the micro-SD card is probably for the SIM card on LTE versions of the tablet.

The Dell Venue tablets will be available from July 1 in the US starting at US$159.99 for the Venue 7 and US$199.99 for the Venue 8. Pricing and availability will vary in other regions.

Optional accessories like the Dell Bluetooth Speaker based on Bluetooth 4.0 and easy NFC connectivity will be made available for both the Venue 7 and Venue 8 tablets. The Dell Bluetooth Keyboard Folio, on the other hand, is an optional wireless Android keyboard that doubles up as a cover and stand is available only for the Venue 8.
