EMC Redefines Data Protection for a Software-Defined Environment

Ronnie Latinazo, Country Manager, Philippines, EMC

EMC has just announced its suite of protection that aims to help customers adapt to a software-defined world and enable their data protection requirements.

Its data protection-as-a-service spans the full continuum of data protection as it has added new integration with primary and protection storage platforms, and with hypervisors and enterprise applications. It also extends support for cloud environments such as data protection-as-a-service, thus enabling smoother migration to software-defined data centers (SDDCs).

The EMC Data Protection Suite is composed of Avamar, NetWorker, Data Protection Advisor, Mozy and SourceOne software. This suite allows integration of products in both on-premise and cloud-based backup and archive environments.

With the introduction of a new Data Domain OS, new capabilities were added to enhance enterprise applications even the support for Oracle, SAP solutions, the SAP HANA platform, IBM DB2, and Microsoft SQL Server.

The new software releases from the VPLEX and RecoverPoint product line now combine to deliver MetroPoint topology - an industry-unique 3 site business continuity capability for mission critical applications. MetroPoint topology combines VPLEX Metro continuous availability with RecoverPoint remote replication and continuous data protection (CDP) for operational and disaster recovery over any distance.

EMC also launched the VPLEX Virtual Edition, which allows deployment of VPLEX as a low-cost virtual appliance, bringing VPLEX continuous availability and data mobility to VMware-centric mid-tier organizations. The product may be available as part of VSPEX proven infrastructure solutions.

“Over the past few years we’ve delivered numerous integrations that, together with a workload-agnostic protection storage platform as an anchor, provide a Protection Storage Architecture. Today, we are announcing products and new integrations that enable customers to deliver a complete spectrum of data protection and availability capabilities as a holistic, consumable service. Data protection-as-a-service is a key tenant for establishing effective protection for software-defined enterprises—a ‘bedrock’ that needs to be in place for organizations to confidently transition to 3rd platform software infrastructures.”

All new EMC data protection products will be generally available in the second quarter of 2014.
