Six months after it unveiled an app for Android smartphones, Flipboard today announced the launch of a tablet-optimized version. Users of Android tablets can now download Flipboard for free on the Google Play Store.

According to the press release, page layouts have been optimized for a variety of screen sizes and aspect ratios. Previously, the Flipboard app is designed only for Android smartphones. Now, Flipboard is able to maximize the wider screens of larger Android devices so that users can save more of their favorite section as tiles and see larger story excerpts. For Android tablet users who have upgraded but still prefer the phone design experience, Flipboard offers an option to switch back using "application mode" in Settings.

Flipboard - "With the new devices that Samsung, Amazon, Google and others have brought to market in the recent months, there’s a fast growing Android market,” said Eric Alexander, Head of International Development at Flipboard. “As more people buy Android tablets for themselves or others over the holidays, we wanted to make sure Flipboard is part of their tablet experience.”

Samsung also worked closely with Flipboard over the past year to optimize the app for use on its tablets. There will also be an upcoming software update from Samsung that brings the new Flipboard experience to existing Samsung tablets such as the Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy Tab series and Nexus 10.

The close cooperation between Samsung and Flipboard comes as no surprise as the app was exclusively available on the Galaxy S III. With today's announcement, it marks a complete expansion of Flipboard into the Google Android ecosystem.
