Neil Young Turns to Kickstarter for PonoPlayer and PonoMusic

The proliferation of smartphones and tablets has seen sales of digital music players drop drastically, even the illustrious iPod was not spared. Despite this trend, legendary rocker Neil Young believes that there is still a market for such devices, especially if it is targeted specifically at audiophiles and discerning listeners.

Enter the PonoPlayer, which the company describes as providing "studio master-quality digital music at the highest audio fidelity possible". The unusual triangular-shaped player is designed to work with PonoMusic, a new music service that provides high resolution digital music from both major and independent music labels.

Combined, PonoPlayer and PonoMusic will be an alternative to more discerning listeners who demand higher quality audio files. Neil Young even goes as far as to say that "hearing Pono for the first time is like that first blast of daylight when you leave a movie theatre on a sun-filled day."

The PonoPlayer will ship with 128GB of storage, which should be enough to store between 1000 and 2000 albums, and will also come with memory card slot to expand storage should the need arise. It will be available for pre-order via Kickstarter on March 15 for US$ 399.
