OLX Philippines emerges as top winner of Google Mobile Hackathon 2017

OLX Philippines bagged the top prize at the recently concluded Google Mobile Hackathon, a programming competition that challenged top developers and programmers to create faster and more efficient mobile-friendly website solutions by using Google's Accelerated Mobile Page (AMP) and Progressive Web Apps (PWA).

The OLX team was the only team to be able to go live with majority of their output and addressed the given task with an aim of increasing returning users and improving user experience of OLX sellers and buyers.

Using Google’s AMP, the team reduced the average time to fully load a page by 50 percent, resulting in more users browsing for comprehensive product searches. Google’s PWA, on the other hand, helped the OLX team to develop an immersive app-like experience for online shoppers that can be accessed through a simple click even without the use of a mobile application.

To increase buyer and seller connection, the OLX development team streamlined the sign-in process through the generation and suggestion of safe passwords. The team also demonstrated an even more convenient web viewing experience through a cache system that lets images load first, a feature that allows OLX users to view more ad details even with slow Internet connection.

“As we continuously work toward shaping winning transactions, it is in our best interest to be consistent and proactive in giving solutions to our Filipino customers. This victory motivates us to look at the different aspects of our customers’ journey that we can simplify through new technologies”, shares Sarah Kuizon, hackathon team lead and OLX Software Engineering Manager.

“It is by giving these opportunities to our employees that we are able to mold world-class Filipinos who are able to uplift lives through our platform”, shares Raffy Montemayor, OLX Philippines General Manager.
