Panasonic Unwraps the Toughpad FZ-M1, a Fully Rugged 7-inch Windows 8 Tablet

Panasonic adds to its range of Toughpad rugged tablets today with the unveiling of the FZ-M1 at CES 2014, which Panasonic is touting as the world's thinnest rugged 7-inch Windows 8 tablet (although how many of those can there actually be?).

Like Panasonic's other toughpads, the FZ-M1 features a magnesium alloy chassis with rubberized bumpers for extra protection for ports and connections that gives it an IP65 rating against water and dust. The tablet measures 17mm thick and weighs about 540g, which is about the same as Pansonic's 7-inch Android JT-B1 tablet. It has a 7-inch 1280 x 800 pixel resolution multi-touchscreen display.

Powering the tablet is an Intel Core i5 Haswell processor, and up to 8GB RAM with a 256GB SSD. The FZ-M1 will launch in Q1 this year, starting at US$2,099. Panasonic also plans to launch a cheaper model with an Intel Atom Bay trail processor that should be available later this year. Both versions will be available with Windows 8.1 Pro or Windows 7 Professional.
