Samsung Officially Unveils Galaxy S5 and New Wearables at Unpacked 5
Samsung unveiled the much anticipated Galaxy S5 smartphone at its Unpacked 5 event MWC 2014 today. “With the Galaxy S5, Samsung is going back to basics to focus on delivering the capabilities that matter most to our consumers,” said JK Shin, President and Head of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung. “Consumers are looking for mobile tools that inspire and support them as they improve their everyday lives. The Galaxy S5 represents an iconic design with essential and useful features to focus on delivering the ultimate smartphone on the market today through people inspired innovation.”
Samsung also unveiled a new smart wearable, the Gear Fit fitness band, which joins the two smart watches announced yesterday, the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo.
Samsung Galaxy S5
The S5 is an inch bigger than the S4, boasting a 5.1-inch Full HD Super AMOLED 1920 x 1080 (432ppi) display. In keeping with Samsung's new "life-proof" and fitness direction, it is IP67 rated dust and water resistant and sports a heart rate monitor for measuring your pulse. The new S5 also boasts fingerprint sensor security, which can be used not only to unlock your phone, but also to make online purchases thanks to a partnership between Samsung and Paypal in 26 countries - Singapore included.
"With this new and secure biometric feature, we eliminate the need for consumers to remember another password, who can instead pay with just one simple swipe of a finger.” said Lawrence Chan Vice President of Asia Pacific Merchant Services and General Manager of Southeast Asia & India, PayPal.
Samsung Gear Fit
To accompany the Galaxy S5, Samsung has also launched its first smart fitness band, the Gear Fit. The slim wristband sports a curved 1.84-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen display and includes a heart rate monitor and a number of standalone fitness apps.
Like the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, the Gear is powered by Tizen, which, like Android, is a Linux-based OS. As with all of Samsung's new devices, it is also IP67 rated against dust and water.
