Apple iPhones are expected to use OLED displays as early as 2018.

According to The Korea Times, a high-ranking industry executive told the publication that Samsung Display recently renewed talks with Apple to supply OLED displays for use in its future iPhones. The executive believes that the first iPhones sporting OLED displays will come in 2018.

The Korea Times - "Samsung Display has recently renewed talks with Apple to supply its small-sized OLED displays for the next iPhones to be released in a few years, which I believe is around 2018," a high-ranking industry executive told The Korea Times last week.

With Samsung Electronics expected to face tough times ahead in the smartphone industry, Samsung Display aims to diversify its portfolio by reaching out to new, bigger and more reliable customers such as Apple and top Chinese handset makers. In the near term, Apple is not expected to adopt OLED displays due to cost considerations and benefits of LCD panels.

Last month, ETNews also reported that Apple is testing OLED panel samples from Samsung. If Apple eventually makes the choice to use OLED panels, Samsung Display will compete with LG Display to supply panels for the iPhones.
